ORDER

Green Card is an international car insurance for travelling abroad. It is compulsory in countries that are members of the international Green Card system, which includes most EU member states.

How does the Green Card work and what does it cover?

The Green Card insurance policy is a guarantee of compensation for damages to the victim in the event of an accident abroad. The Green Card system operates according to a few simple rules:

1. The policy is a confirmation that the party to the road traffic accident bears civil liability under the insurance contract.

2. Insurance is important primarily for the country of residence of the foreigner.

3. Losses are compensated by the country where the vehicle is registered.

4. Compensation is made in accordance with the laws of the country in which the accident occurred.

Important! If an accident occurs abroad, or the driver is simply stopped by the police during an inspection or other violation, and he/she does not have a Green Card, he/she will face a fine (from 1000 euros), and in some cases deportation from the country with a subsequent entry ban (depending on the circumstances and the country of residence).

Earlier, we also told you:

- how to get compensation after an accident abroad and where to apply;

- how to get compensation after an accident if the culprit driver does not have a motor third party liability insurance policy.

How much does the Green Card cover in different countries?

The sum insured of the Green Card is determined by the legislation of the country where the accident occurred and is divided into

- personal injury cover

- coverage of material damage caused to third parties.

The amounts vary from several thousand to several million euros in different countries.

At the same time, there are countries that have no limits on payments for medical treatment in the event of an accident. This means that the victims will be fully compensated, and the culprit of the accident will not have to pay anything out of pocket. Such conditions are valid in Belgium, the UK, Iran, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway, Tunisia, Finland, France, Greece (except for Athos), and the Czech Republic.

See the table below for coverage limits in different countries of the world (the latest relevant information on this issue was published on the official MTIBU Facebook page in March 2024):
