Why do I need a Green Card policy for a car?

This insurance policy is an analogue of a motor third party liability policy that covers the driver's liability in the event of an accident abroad. The Green Card is part of the international insurance system, so the driver is obliged to take out a policy to travel to the member states of the agreement.

The EU countries bordering Ukraine are members of the Green Card agreement. In total, the Green Card is required in 45 countries (see the list on the MTIBU website ).

It is important to note that some of the terms and conditions of the Green Card policy were changed in early 2025:

- Policy format. Now, a PDF policy that can be displayed on a smartphone screen is sufficient. The contract comes into force the next day after it is issued. This means that you won't be able to take out insurance right at the border - you should take care of it in advance.

- Pricing. The fixed price has been cancelled - each insurance company sets the price independently. Therefore, it is worth comparing offers from several insurers before buying.

What does the Green Card cover?

First of all, it should be noted that the payment of compensation is governed by the laws of the country where the accident occurred.

The Green Card provides coverage for damage caused to third parties in an accident. In other words, the insurance company will pay for car repairs or treatment of the victims.

In addition, a valid insurance policy protects the driver from fines. In many EU countries, driving a vehicle with or without expired insurance is considered an offence.

Important! The Green Card only compensates losses to a third party. The driver of the car that caused the accident will not receive compensation. For this purpose, you need to have another type of insurance policy - CASCO with the territory of the EU.

How much does a Green Card cost in 2025?

The cost of insurance is influenced by three main factors:

- Vehicle type. The price will be different for cars, trucks, trailers, and motorcycles.

- Insurance period. You can take out insurance from 15 days to a year.

- Insurance company. Nowadays, each company sets its own prices.

What documents do I need to apply for a Green Card?

The insurance procedure will be quick if you have the following documents:

- passport of a citizen of Ukraine;

- international passport;

- car registration certificate.

Can I buy a Green Card abroad?

Staying abroad does not prevent you from taking out a policy. If the document has expired, simply apply for a new one online. The driver will receive a new policy by email and can print it out if necessary.

How can I check my Green Card policy?

You can read information about your policy in the MTIBU database. To do this, go to the website and provide the following information: policy number and the date on which you are checking the policy.

The police will validate the insurance policy using the QR code indicated on the document.

Where and how to buy a Green Card?

The process of applying for a Green Card on the Visit Ukraine portal is as simple as possible and takes only a few minutes. To buy a Green Card online on the Visit Ukraine website, you need to follow a few simple steps.

2. Select the type of vehicle, region/country of stay (where you are going), the duration of the insurance (your stay abroad) and click the ‘Calculate the cost’ button.

3. Select the insurance agent from whom you want to issue a Green Card and click the ‘Apply’ button.

4. Fill in the form with the data about the policyholder and the car.

5. Confirm the data and agree to the terms of the contract.

6. Pay for the policy in a way convenient for you and receive electronic insurance by email.

Please note! The online Green Card becomes valid the next day after the insurance is issued. That is, it is impossible to take out a policy ‘for today’. Take this into account when planning your trip.
