Temporary restrictions at Shehyni checkpoint: how to plan trips to Poland

Traffic at the Shehyni checkpoint is temporarily restricted due to repairs. Find out who will not be able to cross the border, what alternatives are available, and how to prepare for a trip to Poland
Since April 2025, one of the busiest checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Polish border, Shehyni, has partially restricted its operation to road transport. According to the State Border Guard Service, this decision was made due to large-scale reconstruction and repair work being carried out at the checkpoint.
This article explains what exactly will change for travelers, who will be affected by the restrictions, and how to avoid getting stuck in kilometer-long queues.
For whom is the traffic at Shehyni checkpoint restricted?
According to the State Border Guard Service, traffic is temporarily restricted at the Shehyni checkpoint, which is located in the Lviv region on the border with Poland. In particular:
● cars and trucks are not allowed to leave Ukraine;
● restrictions on entry to Ukraine are in place for freight transport.
The reason for this is repair and reconstruction work, which is expected to last until the first half of May 2025. During this period, the infrastructure of the checkpoints is being updated, capacity and technical support are being improved.

What are the alternatives for crossing the border with Poland?
Due to the restrictions, border guards recommend choosing other checkpoints to leave Ukraine for Poland. Among the possible alternatives for drivers are:
● Krakivets - Korczowa - car, bus, pedestrian;
● Rava-Ruska - Hrebenne - car, bus, pedestrian;
● Yahodyn - Dorohusk - car, freight, passenger;
● Uhryniv - Dolhobychuv - car;
● Hrushev - Budomezh - car, pedestrian.
Before traveling, you should check the latest information on the website of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine or through official Telegram channels - they regularly update data on the load of checkpoints and current restrictions.
If you plan to cross the border by car, it is important not only to choose a different checkpoint but also to take care of insurance. To travel to Poland and other EU countries, you must have an international car insurance policy - a Green Card.
It is easy to apply for it online on the Visit Ukraine portal. It's simple:
1. Select the country of travel
2. Specify the validity period of the policy
3. Enter the car details
All - without queues, overpayments and with official confirmation. Take out a policy in advance to protect yourself from fines and unforeseen situations abroad!
We remind you! Ukrainians in Poland often face legal issues related to road accidents and car re-registration. Read how a car lawyer can help you avoid fines, get compensation, and properly draw up documents to avoid problems with the law in our previous article.
