New Bürgergeld rules: how they will affect Ukrainians in Germany
The main changes are.
1. Tougher sanctions
Persons who refuse to accept a job offer without good reason may lose their benefits entirely. Although a similar rule existed before, its implementation was limited due to the complexity of legal procedures.
2. Increase in fines
To combat illegal employment, the German government will introduce stricter penalties. Sanctions for those who fail to appear at employment centers without good reason will also be increased.
3. Data exchange between agencies
To reduce fraud, the government plans to create a centralized database that will allow social, financial and law enforcement agencies to exchange information on welfare recipients. This will promote transparency and prevent manipulation.
How will this affect Ukrainians?
Given that there are about 1.17 million Ukrainian citizens registered in Germany, most of whom receive assistance under the Bürgergeld program, these changes may affect many Ukrainian refugees. However, experts note that the impact will be minimal, as the reform is mostly symbolic.
Employees of employment centers emphasize that the actual termination of payments due to refusal to work remains unlikely due to the complexity of legal procedures and the possibility of appealing sanctions.
The most important aspect of the reform will be to strengthen control over recipients of social benefits. Ukrainians receiving assistance should be prepared for more thorough checks and the need to confirm compliance with the new criteria.
Despite the planned changes, experts agree that they will not entail significant changes in benefits for most Bürgergeld recipients. Nevertheless, Ukrainians in Germany should be attentive to the new requirements and follow all the rules to avoid possible sanctions.
