Insurance cover for foreign motorists in Ukraine: how mini-Hull insurance works

There are several insurance options available in Ukraine that can help foreign motorists minimise the risks associated with possible car damage or road accidents. But the best option is mini-Hull. Find out how mini-Hull helps to protect your car, what risks it covers, and how easy it is to take out this insurance
Travelling by car gives drivers freedom of movement and flexibility in planning their route. However, when travelling abroad, in particular to Ukraine, it is important to take care of reliable insurance coverage in advance. Why is it so important?
Firstly, there are a number of main risks that any driver may face in an unfamiliar country: road accidents, possible damage to the car for various reasons, as well as military risks (given the current situation in Ukraine).
To minimise financial losses in the event of trouble on the road, foreign drivers are advised to take out mini-Hull insurance. This is a kind of ‘lightweight’ version of a standard motor hull insurance policy: it is cheaper and at the same time covers the main risks that are especially important for those who do not want to take out a full-fledged motor hull insurance policy.
In this article, we will explain how mini-Hull insurance works, what it covers, how to take it out, and why it is especially beneficial to do so through the Visit Ukraine service.
What is mini-Hull and how does it work?
Mini-Hull insurance is a simplified format of car insurance that allows you to insure the most important things, leaving aside the additional options of full Hull insurance.
It usually provides coverage for a certain set of risks (for example, damage as a result of an accident, natural disasters or other specified events, including war risks), but is much cheaper than full hull insurance.
Difference between mini-Hull and standard Hull insurance
1. Cost. The price of a mini-Hull policy is significantly lower. This is an ideal solution for drivers who consider full Hull to be redundant or too expensive.
2. A limited set of risks. Mini-Hull does not cover all possible insured events, but only the main ones (for example, damage in an accident). Additional options (theft, total loss, etc.) may not be available.
3. Validity period. As a rule, mini-Hull can be issued for a shorter period (for example, 1 month), which is convenient for foreign motorists who come for a limited time.
When issued on the Visit Ukraine platform, a mini-Hull insurance policy can be valid for a car with foreign licence plates, which is a key advantage for guests from abroad.
What does mini-Hull cover?
The list of risks in the mini-Hull policy is determined by the terms and conditions of the insurance company with which Visit Ukraine works. Currently, three coverage packages are available on our portal:
🚗 Economy: indemnity in the event of an accident involving another car;
🚗 Basic: coverage of losses in the event of an accident with another vehicle and compensation in case of complete destruction of the car due to natural disasters;
🚗 Maximum + war risks: includes coverage of the Economy and Basic packages and additionally contains protection against passive war risks and coverage of tow truck services.
Do foreign drivers need mini-Hull in Ukraine?
When planning to drive a car with foreign licence plates into Ukraine, drivers often ask themselves the question: will a Green Card alone be enough or should they take out additional insurance?
First of all, it should be borne in mind that under Ukrainian law, when crossing the border by car, a driver must have a valid Green Card, an international third-party liability insurance policy. It covers damage that you may cause to other road users.
However, the Green Card does not cover the repair of your car in the event of an accident, weather damage, theft and other risks, including military risks. Accordingly, without additional insurance, you will be left face to face with all possible expenses.
If you want to protect your car from unforeseen expenses in the event of an accident or other events that lead to damage to your car, mini-Hull is a great option. This is especially true if you plan to stay in Ukraine for a long time, move around different cities, or simply take care of your budget and safety while travelling.

How to take out a mini-Hull in Ukraine?
Taking out a mini-Hull in Ukraine does not take much time and does not require a complex package of documents. The algorithm is quite simple:
You can take out this type of insurance through online services such as Visit Ukraine, which offer package solutions for foreign guests (mini-Hull, medical insurance, etc.). You can also apply for insurance at the offices of insurance companies or by contacting agents in person (but this may be less convenient for foreigners due to the language barrier and the difficulty of finding a trusted insurance organisation).
What documents are required?
- A passport or other document proving your identity.
- Vehicle registration certificate (vehicle registration certificate).
- Driver's licence.
- A valid Green Card policy (if it is a foreign car).
Why is it worth taking out a mini-Hull through Visit Ukraine?
❗️ Service adapted for foreigners: website and support in several languages, detailed consultation, simplified procedure for submitting documents.
❗️ Guaranteed cooperation with trusted insurance companies: no need to look for a reliable organisation on your own, worry about possible fraud or hidden conditions.
❗️ Possibility to buy a package: in addition to mini-Hull, you can buy other insurance products (health insurance with military risk coverage, etc.) in one service.
❗️ Transparency and convenience: all conditions, prices and possible coverage options are indicated on the website, and expert advice is available online.
