What documents do I need to travel to Slovakia by my car?

If you are planning to travel abroad by your own car, it is important to check that you have all the necessary documents before you set off. The driver must have a driver's license, a vehicle registration certificate issued in his or her name or the name of a passenger, and an international insurance policy (Green Card). Additionally, if the license plate does not have the “UA” designation, it is necessary to place the distinctive mark of Ukraine on the car.

A car traveling outside Ukraine must be registered with state license plates with Latin letters (individual license plates are valid only in Ukraine). If the driver is not the owner of the car, he or she must also have a certificate of registration in his or her name or the name of a passenger. To do this, together with the owner of the car, you need to contact the service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and obtain the relevant document. Upon returning to Ukraine, this document must be returned to the service center within 10 days.

If you have a power of attorney to drive someone else's car, it will be valid abroad only if it is translated into the official language of the host country and legalized (apostilled or consularly certified). However, this procedure is complicated, so the best option is to obtain a certificate of registration for traveling abroad.

We will tell you whether Ukrainians need to take out PZP car insurance in Slovakia.

Traffic rules in Slovakia: important details

Slovakia is known for its responsible and courteous drivers who strictly follow the traffic rules. This makes driving in this country comfortable and enjoyable. The road infrastructure here is of a high level, although in mountainous areas you can find winding and narrow roads. For such routes, it is recommended to rent a mid-sized car with all-wheel drive. The cost of car rental in Slovakia starts from 22 euros per day.

Speed limits:

- 50 km/h - in settlements

- 90 km/h - outside the city

- 130 km/h - on highways

All passengers must wear seat belts, and children under 12 years of age and under 150 cm must travel in special car seats.

Winter tires are required from November 15 to March 31, and studded tires are prohibited. Dipped headlights must be on around the clock throughout the year.

The permissible blood alcohol content is 0.0%.

Fines for violations are quite high: 150 euros for running a red light, 150 euros for driving on the side of the road, 120 euros for insulting other road users.

Fuel prices in Slovakia

Gas stations are located throughout the country, and payment is possible both in cash and by card. As of the beginning of 2025, the following average fuel prices were recorded in Slovakia:

- Gasoline 95 - 1,617 euros per liter;

- Gasoline 98 - 1,809 euros per liter;

- Diesel - 1,533 euros per liter;

- Autogas - 0.673 euros per liter.

Toll roads in Slovakia

Toll roads in Slovakia are designed for fast and comfortable travel, but drivers can choose alternative routes without having to pay tolls. Toll roads are marked with a special sign “s úhradou”.

It is important to remember that driving on a toll road without a paid electronic vignette will result in a fine. The amount of fines depends on the category of vehicle and type of violation and can range from 140 to 700 euros.

The price of a vignette for a passenger car in 2025:

- 10 days - €12;

- 30 days - €17;

- 1 year - €60.

You can read the payment instructions and the specifics of purchasing a vignette for trucks here.

Insurance policy Green Card for entry to Slovakia

All vehicles with Ukrainian registration traveling abroad must have a valid Green Card insurance policy. This mandatory international document covers the costs of compensation for damage to third parties' lives, health, and property in the event of a traffic accident in Slovakia and other countries that are members of the Green Card system. Failure to have such an insurance policy may result in significant fines and financial costs in the event of an accident.

If a driver gets into an accident without a valid Green Card, he or she will have to pay all the costs of car repairs and compensation to the victims, which can reach tens of thousands of euros.

The amount of insurance coverage is determined by the legislation of the country in which the accident occurred. In 2025, Ukrainian car owners will be subject to new extended insurance coverage limits: up to EUR 1.5 million for material damage and up to EUR 6 million for compensation for damage to health or life of victims. These changes are in line with European standards and guarantee additional financial protection for drivers.

Starting in 2025, Ukraine will fully switch to the electronic format of the Green Card. Drivers will no longer need to have a paper version, but will only need to store the document in digital format on a smartphone or tablet. This greatly simplifies policy verification and reduces the risk of losing it. However, to avoid possible difficulties at the border, it is recommended to have a printed copy of the document.
